Liz ::  Manager of Programs and Operations  ::  Hometown  •  Indianapolis, Ind.  ::   five words  •  Fun. Smart. Beautiful. Strong. Energetic

Jack  ::  Residential Energy Analyst  •  Hometown  •  Lafayette, Ind.  ::   five words  •  Brainiac. Cute. Creative. Sensitive. Passionate

How they met, as told by Liz ::  I was a senior in high school and went to IU to visit some friends.  I ended up at a party and saw this guy with long curly hair that I thought was so cute.  The next day, I was loading up the car with my friends to get ready to go on a hike and this mystery guy came up to the passenger side of my car to talk about logistics for the caravan to the hike.  He looked at my keys in the ignition, saw my green Phish keychain, and said, “Cool keychain!”  From that moment on, I had a major crush. When I got to college that fall, Jack and I started spending a lot of time with each other.  Fast-forward over 10 years later and we have been together ever since.  I could not imagine navigating life without my very best friend.  I cannot wait to get married to my soulmate!

janaya+billy

I’ve seen lots of brides wearing beautiful high heels on their wedding day. However, I would say 95% of them don’t last the entire day in them. Off the top of my head I’d say that half make it through the first dance while the other half  make it through the end of the ceremony. Janaya is one of those who never took them off or switched into something more comfortable. Janaya, you’re a stronger gal than I, that’s for sure!
Billy with his two brothers and friend.:)
I love dresses with texture like this… I love all of the shadows and dimension it creates.
Favorite!:!:A technical note to photographers: Janaya got ready in one of her church’s offices… we’ve all shot in them numerous times… fluorescent lights with lots of stuff around.:)Soooo, I turned off the lights which made most of the room very dark. I asked that she get ready by the window. Doing so created a dramatic ratio with light falloff (areas of the subject close to the light are far more illuminated than those slightly farther away from the light). PS. When I mention little tips like this I fear that I may come across as a know-it-all or condescending… but people ask so I thought I’d just throw it out there here.:)

The maid of honor helping with the veil.:)Janaya, this portrait of you… you’re a stunner! I couldn’t love it more!:DSide note: these two images, and the one above were all taken in the same lighting conditions as I mentioned above.  This was the funnest moment that I’ve ever witnessed right before a bride was walked down the aisle. A few minutes before their big debut Janaya’s dad (Jerry) busts out his iPhone to snap a quick pic with his daughter. I suggested turning into the light (they were going to be a silhouette if I hadn’t interjected;)), then Janaya grabbed the phone to show him how it was done (I tell ya, our generation sure knows how to take a selfie!).  Jerry promptly posts it to Facebook. Then, literally seconds before the doors opened for their grand entrance, he pulls out his phone to see how many “likes” he had.  Janaya turns to me with a big smile and says, “he’s new to Facebook…”   I laughed wayyyy out loud!

OH! I just found the resulting pic on Facebook. Looks like it ended up getting 97 likes.;)Not bad Jerry… not bad at all! Janaya’s paternal great grandmother got married in this exact same church 90 years ago (1923).Such a sweeeeet ceremony!
It was pouring rain almost the entire day! There were moments of less rain… but yeah… non-stop rain. Howeverrrrr…. they didn’t let a little raaaaain stop ‘em!  The “canned ham” pic on the left, it makes me laugh.:DOhhh that Waaaaacky Bobbi strikes again…!THE RAAAAAIN!!! Hey future Bobbi brides… do you see how rain on your wedding day isn’t a bad thing?! I think these images are beautiful! Imagine your kids seeing these someday… they’ll think, “WHOA! Mom and dad were such badasses… going outside for pics on their wedding day!” I say you shouldn’t pretend your day looked like something it didn’t… embrace it and make the best of it!  I mean… I’m just sayin’.;)I learn something new every day! This is a drinking game called “Fingers”… if you, like me, have never heard of it, it has a Wikipedia page. You’re welcome in advance.;)HA!
Reception time!  This was during the maid’s of honor toast. See her wedding band? That belonged to Janaya’s aforementioned great grandmother who was married in the same church. Jerry (dad) wore it on his pinky finger every day…well… every day until this day.:)I love family heirlooms!
OHHH BILLY…! Your dance moves are hard to keep up with! For as long as we’ve been in Indianapolis shooting weddings, we’ve never seen the famous duo that is Dave & Rae… it took shooting a wedding in Fort Wayne (2 hours north) to fiiiinally see them do their thing! They certainly didn’t disappoint.:D

HA!All receptions should end exaaactly like this. I feel very strongly about this.:)

bride+groom

What was the most memorable moment of your day?

Janaya:  During the ceremony, I was very excited and nervous.  I tried to put Billy’s ring on the wrong hand. At the reception, we danced from the first to the last song. It was awesome.

Billy: When the priest was late.  I was very angry.  I would like to see the video of me entering the church.

 Any advice for future bride/grooms?

Janaya:  Don’t interrupt your reception to do a group picture.  Do it all at the church. (Ditto;))

Funniest memory from your wedding day?

Janaya:  Literally seconds before my dad and I started walking down the aisle,  my dad pulled out his phone check to see how many likes he received on a “selfie” of us taken minutes earlier.  I felt the need to explain what he was doing to Bobbi:)He recently starting using Facebook. Funniest daughter/dad moment I’ve ever witnessed. Fo’real!

If you could do it all over, would you change anything?

Janaya:  Nope. Not a thing.  Hire Bobbi and Mike. Hire Ben.  They are easy to work with and awesome!

Where did you go on your honeymoon?

Antigua. It is recommended.

You see, Ben the videographer is one of our best friends… so when we work with him, he’s naturally included in our “action shots” that we take throughout the day. Full disclosure: 95% of all action shots are taken by Mike… to include this one.
The REAL reason why I started wearing my hear naturally curly? So I could freely shoot in the rain.:)Ben and his second-shooter Katie had my back when shooting the rings.:)Mike testing his light. OH HEY LOOK! I TOOK ONE OF MIKE!!!!:DHere he is with Ashton Kutcher the groomsman.

Much love friends!

the proposal

I wasn’t going to make a blog entry entirely dedicated to the proposal because there’s going to be a video soon…. however I just can’t resist it!

Here’s how things went down… in enumerated form… (if you know me at all, you know I LOVE me an enumerated list!)

1. I put requests out on social media for models for our upcoming Fall workshops. I prefer that our couples be engaged as I want the workshop experience to be as real as possible (engaged vs boyfriend/girlfriend vs already married are totally different and the way that you photograph those relationships is quite different).

2. I got this email from Lanette that evening, “Bobbi, I was SO excited to see you post on Instagram about the workshop models! I have been following you guys for so long, I love your work! Cain and I have been together for 3 years and we aren’t shy around the camera! We are not engaged (yet!), but it is in the near future:)Hope to hear back!” -Lanette

3. Full confession: because they weren’t engaged yet, I put their name in the “maybe” pile.

4. The next morning I get an email from Cain, it says… “My name is Cain, I believe my girlfriend, Lanette, messaged you about us being available for the workshop. I wanted to ask you if we were selected, would it be okay or could we work in some way that I actually propose. I think this would be a great surprise and she wouldn’t see it coming.  Also she loves your work so it would mean a lot to her, though I do understand if it would mess up your workshop. Thank you, Cain”

5. OHHHH MANNNN!!!! I start to get all heart thumpy… but immediately am concerned that this could be a huge distraction from our workshop… and to be quite frank, the workshop is always my priority. So I head over to Facebook, where we have a group dedicated to all bbmk workshop alum and ask them what they think we should do. THEY.WENT.CRAZY! Saying things like, “OH MY GOSH! I WISH I WERE GOING TO THAT WORKSHOP!” “It’s a no-brainer, you have to!” “What a lucky group to see a live engagement!”

6. Two hours after receiving Cain’s message, I emailed him back… “Oh my gosh. You win at life! I hadn’t chosen anyone yet… but your email put me over the edge! Ahhhh!!!!! She doesn’t know she’s been picked yet so don’t say anything. :) We’ll talk details soon. First I need to email and let her know she’s been chosen. Oh. Surprise… My good friend is a videographer and I called him after I got your message and arranged for him to be there to video the whole thing. BOOOOOM! I’m so damn excited about this! Have I mentioned you win at life Cain?”  -Bobbi

7. I then email Lanette to let her know we’ve chosen her and Cain and we start making arrangements. She was hype!

8. Next up, I called Cain… we brainstormed… and came up with a plan. I told him what I would say so that he would know exactly when we were ready and in position for the big moment. The secret phrase was something like, “Tell Lanette what you love about her…” I also told him we would  come up with a perfect spot for the big moment. The pressure was on!

9. Then the big day came. When they showed up to the workshop… Cain seemed both nervous and excited.  Lanette was just all smiles and happiness… which I’m pretty sure is her constant state.;)

10. I wanted them to be comfortable enough in front of the camera and all of us watching before he popped the question… so we photographed them for about an hour before switching locations.

When we pulled up to the red bridge… Cain immediately knew that this was it. After all, it was quite picturesque! So yeah… we didn’t waste much time! I tell you what, he was ready! It would have been torture to make him wait any longer!

I had them move into position and pose three times before giving the cue (jussssst to make sure that we had our settings perfect and were locked into the perfect composition. Hey now, this ain’t our first rodeo!;))

Cain, on the right looking at me as though saying, “I’m so ready! Are we doing this?!”So I walk near him while Lanette was facing forward, give them instructions for the next shot and give him the nod on the sneak…
Then… our code phrase… “This time when you give her a squeeze I want you to tell Lanette what you love about her…”

THEN…
IT…HAPPENED!Cain… you NAILED it! I love that he gave us a thumbs up. Oh man… I’m tearing up right now remembering this!
She gets a good look at her ring for the first time. You see, I’m not sure he got the whole phrase out before she attacked him with hugs! Then reality hits her and she realizes that we’ve all been standing there the whole time!  I think it was about at this point she looked at Cain and said… “DOES MY MOM KNOW?!” She was SO excited to share the news with her parents:)I wait for the immediate excitement to happen and I go in for the hugs! I just couldn’t resist! See Cain there? Adrenaline was pummmmping before the whole thing went down and then, like a flash, he was draaaaained!  You see, he had this HUUUUGE ball of anxious/nervous/excited/happy energy that he’d been keeping in for months… and then BOOOOM! Cain, you are quite the catch I tell ya!I just adore you both so much!
She had to go spread the news with all of her new BFFs!;)
I don’t think there was a dry eye standing on that bridge! Watching this was something that we’ll all carry with us forever and ever. …did this really just happen?!IT DID!Then we walked back to the bus. Correction: blissfully walked back to the bus!;)…with the whole gang in tow.But before we went any further I saw a cool spot for a photo. It was a photography workshop, after all!;) I sat them down and set up the shot.  This was the first moment of stillness that had happened since the big moment……and it hits her… this was really happening. This was my favorite moment of the entire proposal.:)Yes yes yes…. she called her mom! The reason she’s holding that little mic is because the whole thing was caught on film by Ben.:)…and then it hits her again.:DThe scene.… it was back to workshop time…:D

I got an email the next day from Cain…

Hey I just wanted to send another email and thank you so much again for making this so perfect. With your, Mike and Ben’s help I was able to give the perfect proposal to Lanette! So thank you again.. YOU GUYS ROCK!!

Here’s an excerpt from Lanette’s blog about the proposal.

What started off as an honest once in a life time opportunity, turned into a once in a life time memory.

As I posted before I have been very excited about the workshop modeling for Bobbi+Mike. Once we arrived there we (I) found out that we were having our video taken that day too! But not for us (lie) but for a promo for Bobbi+Mike’s workshop. That’s what I thought! Little did I know then, this was all a scam! Cain already knew, and it wasn’t for Bobbi and Mike … It was for ME! But I did not know this at the time, I was clueless and frankly just not thinking straight. But how could I be? I was too excited about the fact I was about to spend the day with my favorite photographers!

So we were on our way around town, being photographed and having a crowd of about 12 other photographers overseeing bobbi doing her thing! Boy does she know how to work it! She’s crazy, crazy awesome, crazy awesomely perfect, crazy awesomely perfectly wonderful… should I go on? Honestly the way she connects with clients so fast, not just anyone can do that. Plus her creativity is out of this world. (Have I mentioned that just I adore you Lanette!) So here I am enjoying and taking it all in and trying to just have fun and go with it. Cain was doing awesome too! He seemed relaxed, having fun, no care in the world kind of way. He has a different story though of that first hour of being photographed. He was flipping out inside, going nuts, nerves like none other, going over in his head the moment he would ask me to marry him…. ALL those things he kept INSIDE, not stuttering once… or spilling any beans. He’s awesome. Kind of like Bobbi awesome!;)

We get to this beautiful walk way, with trees on both sides covered with leaves. Oh and there were leaves on the ground too, it was just breath taking! Bobbi had Cain come up behind me and whisper in my ear all the things he loved about me… then told us to think about how special it is to have him back home after being gone for so long at Basic and AIT. I did think about it, and even started getting emotional there… (more emotion was coming) finally she told cain to say something else, (this is where that blur started) because the next thing I knew Cain said “I want to spend the rest of my life with you” And my eyes turn the size of golf balls as I turned to see him getting down on one knee!!! I can’t believe I’m writing about this, it’s real. It really happened! I can’t tell you what all took place after that. I know I said yes because the whole work shop was cheering for us. I flashed my hand to everyone and then yeah, it’s all a blur LOL

But remember that videographer who was doing the “promo” for the workshop. Yeah, he’s awesome too and had Cain mic’d up, so not only do I get to see this moment through photographs. But through film, with sound. You all get to hear what I heard, see what I saw, and share in that moment with us. AHHH. This is happening!”

HEEEEEERE IT IS!!!!!! THE VIDEOOOO!!!!!!! Ben nailed it! Duh.;)There’s even a little cameo by yours truly.:D

Cain, I feel honored that you thought to include us. I’ll never forget that moment… EVER!

Lanette, please never change! You, my love, are one in a million.

Both of you are so very lucky to have found each other!

OHHHH how I wish you two were getting married on a day we were available!

Thank you again… for…. everything.:D

Sending love and high fives!

~bobbi+mike:!:+:?:

PPS. Still a few April workshop spots available! We would LOVE to have you! Don’t hesitate to email us (hello at bobbiandmike dot com) if you have any questions. Side note: our workshop is relevant to both wedding and family / portrait photographers.:)

Oh, you guys made me cry! All the love and happiness for Lanette and Cain. And Bobbi and Mike – you really ROCK!ReplyCancel

lanette+cain

Just like Brianna and Jon’s workshop session… we had to get through our normal weddings and sessions before I could fully commit to blogging this one.

Three words… Worth. The. Wait!

Meet Lanette and Cain.  They’re ridiculously cute and madly in love. And by madly in love I mean these two are in goo-goo-ga-ga-over-the-moon style love.:)
You see, Cain is in the Army National Guard, and he’s recently back from Basic and Advanced training… and when you’re young and in love, it’s quite the relationship test.  I know from experience. Up to that point in my life, I’d never gone through anything so hard.Ohhhh you twooo!!!!!They’re way fun.:)Thanks for rolling with some of my silly ideas.:DYou want us to stand in front of this garage and look at each other lovingly? Why yes… we do that every day! Did I mention it was raining during this session? Yeah. It was raining.:)
HA!I couldn’t resist it! Meet the feet of Team Workshop #14.:DOh man oh man you two are just soooo stinking cuuuuuute! Did I mention they were madly in love?! This one’s my favorite:!:Right as we were finishing up someone asked if we would show them how we do the “lay down on shoulders” move. At this point it was definitely raining… and Lanette and Cain were perfectly fine doing anything we asked. We always have the best models for all of our workshops. Thanks to all of you who’ve participated throughout the last three years.:)Oh hey look… Now you can meet the Team bbmk’s feet!;)

……………………………

Indianapolis, Ind.

Together  ::  11.11.11  •  Engaged  ::  11.6.13;)  •  Wedding  ::  May, 2014

Lanette ::  photographer and part time nanny  ::  Hometown  •  Bluffton, Ind.  ::   five words  •  Hero, respectful, hilarious, simply the best!

Cain  ::  Student and Army Soldier  •  Hometown  •  Decatur, Ind.  ::   five words  •  Beautiful, Loyal, Loving, Wise, Smiley:D

How they met, as told by Lanette ::  The 4 year old boy I nannied (Jasper) referred to me as his “girlfriend” one day he wanted to show me off to his friend. Thinking I was about to meet another 4 year old I said “Okay” but was surprised when his friend ended up being a guy my age! Cain was that friend, he knew I was showing up that day hoping to get my number. Which he got, but only because of those big brown eyes;)Jasper has yet to forgive Cain for stealing his girl.

……………………………

Oh, yeah, by the way… THIS happened in the midst of the session.:)Cain emailed me on the sneak after Lanette sent me a message requesting to be  workshop models. A live proposal?! It’s a no-brainer… but of COURSE we chose these two to be our models!  I called Cain and we made plans. We were even speaking in code during the session and she. Had. No. Idea. Genuinely one of the most incredible things we’ve ever witnessed.:)Ben took video so you guys will be able to watch the whole thing unfold!:D
Now for some images of us doin’ what we doooo…I soooo sasssssy!Seeeeee! Even when they’re not getting their photos taken they still look at each other all googoo-gaga style.:)
The moment immediately following their proposal. Cain did such a great job of covering up his nerves before the big moment. This whole team was a big ol’ emotional mess watching the whole thing go down!
I lay down… even when it’s raining. I don’t suggest that.:)
Oh hey look… a parking garage… with a mirror… SELFIE TIME!!!!…at least you know that I’m willing to do what I ask our clients to do.;)
Ben picked up one of our cameras… Rarely do you see both of us in one photo! HEEERE WEEEE ARRRRE… Workshop #14!  PS. My hand is on my camera that’s hanging from my side… not Lanette’s thigh… I assure you it’s an optical illusion.;)As always, photo by Ed the bus driver.

To Lanette and Cain, we can’t thank you enough for sharing such an important and special time with us… it’s something we’ll never ever forget!

Side note: we still have a few spots left at upcoming workshops #15 (April 9-10) and #16 (April 12-13). Check thissss website out if you want more info… we would love to have you! Feel free to email us if you have any questions. :) Or if you can’t make it to this one, sign up for the mailing list to be the first to know!

Sending love and high fives to alllll our workshop peeps!

Much love friends,

~bobbi+mike:!:+:?:
